Oh, spring. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the students are…stressed out of their minds? Ah, yes, it must be state testing season! As elementary teachers, we know that testing can be a source of anxiety for our students. But fear not! There are plenty of strategies that we can use to help our little test-takers feel more at ease. So, grab a cup of coffee, take a deep breath, and let’s dive in.
- Create a safe space: Teachers can help students feel more comfortable by creating a positive classroom environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn from them. Encouraging students to support each other and emphasizing the importance of effort over grades can help reduce the pressure of testing.
- Teach the art of test-taking: Test-taking can be a real art form. From time management to strategic guessing, there are plenty of skills that can be taught to help our students feel more confident. Take some time to familiarize your students with the testing format. Teach them how to read and follow directions, how to pace themselves, and how to eliminate wrong answers. By arming them with these tools, we’re giving them the confidence to tackle any test that comes their way.
- Namaste, testing anxiety: When it comes to testing anxiety, mindfulness and relaxation techniques can be a game-changer. Take a few minutes each day to practice deep breathing exercises, visualization, or progressive muscle relaxation. Not only will it help your students feel more calm and centered during testing, but it’s a great skill that they can carry with them throughout their lives. - Get movin’ and groovin’: Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress and anxiety. So, let’s get our little test-takers moving! Whether it’s a quick brain break, a few minutes of stretching during testing breaks, or a dance party in between tests, physical activity can be a great way to help our students release tension and feel more relaxed.
- Speak kindly: As teachers, we know that the power of positive self-talk is not to be underestimated. Encourage your students to use positive affirmations, such as “I am prepared” or “I am capable,” to help boost their confidence during testing. By speaking kindly to themselves, our students can shift their mindset from one of fear and doubt to one of strength and determination.
- Call in the cavalry: We’re not in this alone! Communication with parents can be a key component in supporting our students during testing season. Send home resources for parents to help their children manage anxiety, and encourage them to make sure their child comes to school well-rested and fed. A good night’s sleep and a nourishing breakfast will contribute to their child’s ability to show what they know on test day.
Testing season may bring its fair share of stress and anxiety, but we’ve got this! As teachers, we have a variety of tools and techniques at our disposal to help alleviate the stress and anxiety that our students may feel. By incorporating some of these test prep strategies, we can help our students feel empowered and ready to tackle any test that comes their way.
